The Long Walk and Imprisonment at Bosque Redondo

The forced "Long Walk" of the Navajo people from Chanyon de Chelly to their prison camp in  New Mexico is one of the most tragic events in all of Indian-White relations.  Why were the Navajo removed from their traditional homelands?  Who was involved with the removal of the Dineh from their lands.  How were  other Indian tribes involved?  What was life like at Bosque Redondo -- the site of Dineh  imprisonment?  This removal of the Navajo is sometimes compared to the Cherokee Trail of Tears. How was the Navajo Removal different from that of the Cherokee?  How many Navajo died along the way & in their New Mexico concentration camp?  What is the legacy of the Long Walk and the  stay in Bosque Redondo?  What was it about Navajo religion that made the people suffer so much when they were taken away from their traditional lands? r

Hey...how come we never heard about this? This event started during the Civil War. Is that why we never were taught about this? Does the story get eclipsed by the big events in American history happening back east?

Do some digging!  Tell us about this event that happened to one of the largest tribes in America.
