Acoma

Up

They call it "Sky City" and for good reason. It's built on top of a mesa, more than 300 feet up in the air!  The Pueblo town of Acoma and the Hopi town of Oraibi are considered the oldest continuously occupied towns in America. How old is it? Who lives there? What language is spoken there & how is it related to the other Pueblos? When did the Spanish first encounter Acoma and what transpired. Who was Onyate?  Is it true that the Spanish mission church at Acoma was built with slave labor?  Who governs the Pueblo today -- political and spiritual governments?

Acoma is the most Western of the Rio Grande pueblos, so much of there ceremonial life has connections with Zuni and Hopi traditions. What ceremonial events are prominent?

This is a great and awe inspiring place to visit!  Take us there with your research...
