Meredith to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month
By Allison Ladd, ’05
The Meredith Association of Cultural Awareness invites the Meredith community to celebrate Native American Heritage Month by enjoying the events they have planned throughout the next week.
Starting on November 11, Native American handmade jewelry and art will be on sale in the Cate Center lobby from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will also be a presentation by Gwen Locklear, an artist, educator and storyteller, at 5:30 p.m. in room 162 in SMB.
On November 17, Belk Dining Hall will be featuring traditional Native American music, food and exhibits beginning at 4:30 p.m. Later that evening, in Kresge Auditorium, a special viewing of "Real Indian" will be shown at 6 p.m. "Real Indian" is a unique look into the fascinating and complex world of Lumbee Indian culture and aims to make the viewer question perceptions of Native Americans, as well as the meaning of our own cultural identity.
Finally on November 20, students may visit the North Carolina Museum of History for the American Indian Heritage Celebration. Enjoy free live performances, crafts, games, demonstrations, and food from 11a.m. until 4p.m.
To attend the celebration at the museum or for more information please email Karen Law at lawkar@meredith.edu.
