Meredith History Students Explore Historical Markers
Students enrolled in HIS 300: Introduction to Public History will soon have work published on the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker web site, as a result of a partnership with the Office of Research of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History.
Students Jenna Burnham, Liz Fairbanks, Michelle Palmore, Eryn Ritter and Angie Rush selected markers from the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program, and wrote essays for inclusion in a web site dedicated to the program. Each essay provides detailed information about the events, persons, places or structures that appear on the silver and black road signs that have graced North Carolina roadways since 1936.
According to Assistant Professor of History Dan Fountain, who teaches HIS 300, the essays underwent a thorough review process at both Meredith College and the Office of Research.
At the project’s conclusion, Research Supervisor Michael Hill and his staff at the Office of Research selected 14 essays written by the students to appear on the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker web site http://ncmarkers.com/Home.aspx. Each author’s name will appear on the web site among the list of contributing authors.
