Students Create Eco-Art for Earth Day
By Melyssa Allen
Meredith's landscape recently received some temporary new additions, thanks to students in the College's Three-Dimensional Design (ART 207) classes. The artwork featuring recyclable materials was created in honor of Earth Day.
Lisa Pearce, who teaches ART 207, said the pieces were designed to "celebrate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle." More than 10 Eco-Art sculptures and installations are on display, including a recycled paper-banner created from waste collected on Meredith's campus in only two hours and a "flower garden" made from aluminum cans.
Students researched Earth Day, eco-art, eco-artists and recycling statistics in order to create their work. Pearce said each project "will be disassembled and recycled back to their original sources."
Environmental awareness has been an ongoing topic at Meredith this academic year, during which the College's Student Government Association sponsored "The Campaign for a Greener Meredith." Meredith held an Earth Day celebration on April 22. Visit www.meredith.edu/mcnews/earthday-declaration2.htm for more information.
