Performance Artist and Playwright Claudia Stevens to Perform at Meredith College

Performance artist and playwright Claudia Stevens will perform one of her works on Tuesday, April 3 at 8 p.m. in Meredith College’s Jones Auditorium.

Stevens will present a fully staged production of her postmodern musical, “Blue Lias, or the Fish Lizard’s Whore,” which is a literary romp about controversial Victorian paleontologist Mary Anning. The play considers the interactions of science, religion and art.

Claudia Stevens creates unique interdisciplinary pieces, now a body of a dozen plays, for her solo performance as musician-actor. Recent published works are widely ranging in their content. Trained as a pianist, musicologist, conductor and composer, Stevens holds degrees from Vassar College, the University of California at Berkeley and Boston University. She has held academic, conducting and performance positions at Williams College and the College of William and Mary, where she is associate professor of piano.

Her newest play, “Blue Lias,” had its first reading in 2005 during Stevens’ artist residency at Cornell University, with its world-premiere on March 25, 2007 at Rutgers University. The play is set in the present within an imaginary convention of scientists. Stevens brings to life Mary Anning, a colorful and unique figure of Victorian England, and Stevens also portrays Anning’s nemesis, clergyman and geologist William Buckland.
