Meredith College Celebrates New Era in Athletics

Atheltics BannersMeredith College celebrated the kickoff of the 2007-08 athletics season with a special event on August 22, 2007, in Jones Auditorium, a highlight of which was the unveiling of the College’s new athletics logo and the announcement of a new nickname for the sports teams.

“We are celebrating many things today—a new season, a new logo, an updated nickname for our sports teams, and Meredith’s official entrance into the USA South Conference,” said Meredith President Maureen A. Hartford. “But, most importantly, we’re here to celebrate our student-athletes, and their past and future accomplishments.”

Hartford noted that last year, 25 percent of Meredith’s student-athletes had achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, while two teams made the NCAA tournament for the second time in Meredith’s history.

bannersDirector of Athletics Jackie Myers said the athletics staff are “excited about the opportunity to move into a new conference and are pleased to have a new athletics logo to take with us.”

College Unveils First Official Athletics Logo
Meredith’s new athletics logo features an “M” and an angel wing, in keeping with the College’s “Angel” mascot.

“The new logo and nickname is a fresh and fun beginning that marks an exciting kickoff for Meredith as we enter into a new conference,” said Lauren Powers, ’07, a former student athlete who helped unveil the new logo.

The primary logo was designed by Winston-Salem based PAVE Creative Group, with guidance from Meredith’s athletics identity committee, which formed in 2006 in preparation for Meredith’s joining the USA South Conference.

In 1980, the angel was endorsed as Meredith’s mascot by the Student Government Association Executive Committee, but there had never been an official angel logo in use for athletics.

After gathering opinions from Meredith constituents the decision was made to keep the Angel in the College’s athletics nickname. Input from Meredith student athletes, alumnae leaders, faculty and staff helped shape the final logo and nickname selection. (Click here to view timeline.)

Vice President for College Programs and Meredith alumna Jean Jackson announced at the celebration that Meredith’s athletics teams will now be known as the “Avenging Angels.”

Jackson said the “Angel” nickname will be modified for athletics in order to “make clear that Meredith College is serious about athletics…that we should be known to all as agile, fierce, powerful, loyal, determined [and] complex warriors.”
