Asteroid Discovered By Meredith College Students

A team of Meredith College students working on an astronomy undergraduate research project have discovered an asteroid.  Laurie Hunter, Jacinta Whitehurst and Tammy Haynie, working with Assistant Professor of Physics Bill Schmidt, discovered an asteroid known as K07C51J.

The discovery was officially confirmed by the Minor Planet Center on February 16.  The project, which is part of the International Asteroid Search Campaign, involves time lapsed image analysis to detect objects moving relative to background stars.
