Thank you for visiting Meredith Mathematics & Science Institutes!
In 2012 MMSI continues to offer quality, residential professional development opportunities that focus on important mathematics and science content for K through Middle School. The summer Institutes are designed for all classroom teachers, resource teachers, lead teachers, mathematics/science coordinators and supervisors.
Common Core State Standards will become North Carolina’s official curriculum in the 2012-2013 school year, and MMSI will focus on science expectations for grades 2 through 5 as well as offer grade-level specific mathematics professional development for grades K through 8.

Join us for two days of specific professional development that explores the critical areas for each grade. Participants will discuss the unique challenges for the grades, important instructional strategies, and ways to support student understanding of significant mathematical content. Opportunities for student engagement and achievement will become evident when classroom instruction stresses connectedness and coherence.
Science
In sessions for grades 2-3 and 4-5, participants will learn how to use inexpensive, hands-on/minds-on activities to successfully incorporate the Common Core Essential Standards into their Science curriculum.Force and motion, transfer of energy, and the composition of matter will be taught using inquiry based instruction. Tips for setting up cooperative lab groups, discipline in an inquiry based setting, science notebooking, the scientific method, and science fair ideas will all be discussed.Activities and suggestions will be given for each specific grade level
Class size is limited, so consider organizing a school team to take advantage of the grade-level specific opportunities. The schedule is set so that individuals may attend the sessions for one or two grades.
Classes begin at 8:30 and will end at 3:45 each day. All materials and meals are included in the registration fee.
