Urban Bush Women Founder to Speak Tonight Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founding artistic director of Urban Bush Women, will speak at Meredith College on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. An award-winning dancer and choreographer, Zollar works with dance to tell the untold stories of the disenfranchised. Her lecture is titled “Transformational Leadership: We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For.” The lecture will present the story of her recent experience with dance communities in New Orleans. Following the lecture, Zollar and the audience will “walk the talk” in the Johnson Hall Rotunda. Just follow the music! This event is free and open to the public. Zollar’s visit is sponsored by the Meredith College Convocation Committee. About Jawole Willa Jo Zollar: Zollar founded Urban Bush Women in 1984. In addition to creating over 30 repertory works for Urban Bush Women, Zollar has created choreography for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Arizona, Philadanco, University of Maryland, University of Florida, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Virginia Commonwealth University, Towson University and others. In 2006, Zollar was recognized with a New York Dance & Performance Award, a BESSIE, for her choreography of the Pearl Primus-inspired dance, “Walking With Pearl…Southern Diaries.” This work was also recognized by the National Endowment as an American Masterpiece: Dance – College Component. She is a former board member of Dance/USA, the national dance service organization based in Washington, DC and member of the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD). Zollar has received the Martin Luther King Distinguished Service Award from Florida State University, where she holds a tenured position as the Nancy Smith Fichter Professor in the Department of Dance. Meredith’s campus theme for 2009-10 is “Catalysts for Change.” Zollar is a “catalyst for change” who focuses on community engagement through dance and choreography.
