Professor Emeritus Tucker Passes Away

Meredith Professor Emeritus Charles Rolfe Tucker passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at age 85. Tucker became a sociology professor at Meredith College in 1964, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1989.

“Dr. Tucker was a long-time member of the faculty who was known for his service to the College and to the community, especially to the Baptists of North Carolina,” said Meredith Vice President for Academic Programs Allen Page. “He was noted for his care of his students and for his attention to detail in the drafting of policy and in debates during faculty meetings.”

Prior to joining the Meredith faculty, Tucker began a career as a minister, serving at Kirkwood Baptist Church in Kirkwood, Ky., at Parkton Baptist Church in Parkton, N.C., and at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, in Cary, N.C. He also taught the Bible and theology at Wingate University.

Tucker is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rachel Stubbs Tucker; by his sons, Randy Tucker and wife, Zoe McKay-Tucker and Ed Tucker and wife, Noel W. Tucker, all of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Lucas McKay, Chris Tucker, Spencer McKay, Zack Tucker, Dylan Tucker and Mary Jordan Tucker; and by his sister, Ann Tucker Denser, of Memphis, Tenn.

A memorial service was held on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dr. Charles R. Tucker Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church of Raleigh, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603.
