Explorer Helen Thayer to Visit Meredith Helen Thayer has been to the North Pole, and she's been to the Gobi Desert. On December 1, she will be at Meredith College. Her visit is sponsored by the Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Science. One of National Geographic's "great explorers," Helen Thayer was the first woman to travel on foot, without replenished supplies, to the Magnetic North Pole. She has crossed the Gobi Desert, kayaked remote areas of the Amazon, and inspired many through her writings and photography.
