Audiobooks for summer
May 8, 2008
Summer’s a good time to check out the library’s collection of audiobooks. You can see a list of all 1806 titles by searching for the word “audiobooks” on the main library catalog page. You can search for a particular author or title by combining the author or title with the word audiobooks in your search. For example, “King and audiobooks” will retrieve all audio by Stephen King. Our audiobooks are not on CD. To use them you download them from the link in the catalog and transfer them to an MP3 player. Sorry, iPods won’t work. Please see CCL library staff for tips for successful downloads.
PBS Video on Demand
January 14, 2008
The library is pleased to announce the availability of over 200 PBS videos online. When you do a keyword search for "pbs video nclive" you will get links to 223 PBS videos that can be streamed to your computer. No downloading or saving is required. You can choose from popular series like Frontline, American Masters, Empires, Scientific American Frontiers, the American Experience and more. Adding one of these titles to the basic search above will retrieve all available titles in a particular series.
Teachers may want to use these videos as an alternative to copies on reserve in the library. Others may want to use the videos for research or just see their favorite PBS series again. The quality and size of the videos are not ideal, but improvements are in the works.

Library Supporting Campus
Causes
November 27, 2007
The
Meredith library is looking for a few good fundraising projects
to support. Thanks to our users’ patronage of the ongoing
library book sale, the book sale fund is growing. All book sale
receipts are donated to campus fundraising projects. A wide
variety of projects are eligible, including:
• campaigns to raise money for student groups
• campaigns by students to raise money for non-Meredith
groups
• campaigns by Meredith groups to support Meredith or community
activities
• individuals who are raising money to engage in charitable
activities, such as mission trips or disaster relief trips
To benefit as many projects as possible, the grants are small,
usually $50-100. Since its inception, the library book sale
has provided over $3,000 to worthy causes at Meredith.
To apply for funds, send a summary of your project, timeline,
and amount requested to Ted Waller in the library at wallert@meredith.edu.
Please have a Meredith account number available if one is associated
with your project.
The faculty and staff of Carlyle Campbell Library are pleased
to be able to support Meredith in this way. We invite all members
of the College community to become part of this project by purchasing
and contributing books to the sale, which goes on year-round.
Contributions of books can be sent to Ted Waller in the library.
All books are only $1.00, and the sale shelf is next to the
library entrance.

Johnson Hall Exhibit
Oct. 09, 2006
A new Meredith College Archives display in Johnson Hall tell the
story of Meredith’s first campus, located from September
1899 until December 1925 in the block surrounded by Edenton,
Jones, Blount, and Person Streets in downtown Raleigh. Maps,
photographs, the architect’s sketch of Main Building,
and more are on display in Johnson Hall, first floor.
Main Building, Faircloth Hall, and private residences purchased by
the College provided space for dormitories, administrative offices,
living quarters for the president and his family, kitchen, dining
room, laboratories, classrooms, chapel, parlors, library, auditorium,
bedrooms for teachers, infirmary, and art studio. Overcrowding
prompted the trustees in 1923 to buy the 135-acre Tucker Farm
for a new campus, and in January 1926, the new Meredith opened.
See other displays at http://www.meredith.edu/library/archives.

Reference USA
March 20, 2006
At
first glance this is just an automated telephone directory for
the entire United States. It contains the addresses and telephone
number for more than 102 million U.S. residents, 12 million
businesses, nearly 700,000 health care providers and approximately
95,000 high tech companies. But that is just part of the function
of this database.
For each resident in the database there is information from
the Census Bureau on the median income of the area in which
this person lives and the median value of his home. The actual
location, i.e., latitude and longitude are also given for the
residence.
Business
information includes number of employees and estimated annual
sales. In addition to searching by name you may also do a custom
search by zip code, SIC or NAICS code or number of employees,
or a combination of these data elements. Similarly, heath care
professionals may be search for by name, location, medical school
attended, telephone number and type of practice. The high tech
companies may be search for by such criteria as geographic location,
sales range, industry code, or ticker symbol.

here to try it out. If you have any questions,
please contact the Reference Department at 760-8095
