Faculty and Staff
Instructors in the program are attorneys and legal assistants with experience in the area of practice in which they teach. The program director, also an attorney, teaches some of the core curriculum courses in addition to her role as chief administrator.
Marisa S. Campbell,
Director, Paralegal Program

In her role as Director of the Paralegal Program, Ms. Campbell is responsible for all aspects of the program, including overseeing curriculum and instruction to maintain compliance with American Bar Association approval guidelines; hiring, supervision and support of instructors; recruiting, admissions and placement; advertising and publicity; relations with the local and state bar and with an advisory committee of attorneys and paralegals; and preparing budgets and schedules. She also teaches Legal Survey and Legal Research and Writing. In addition to her duties at Meredith, Ms. Campbell is a member of the North Carolina State Bar's Board of Paralegal Certification, is President-Elect of the American Association for Paralegal Education and is an Advisory member of the Authorized Practice Section of the North Carolina State Bar. Prior to her position at Meredith, Ms. Campbell was in private practice and served in 1996-7 as the Managing Director for the National Alliance for Community and Technical Colleges under the leadership of Dr. George A. Baker.
Clay Eaton,

From 1989–1999 Clay was a professional writer and corporate trainer in the information technology industry. He started working in higher education in 2000.

Miriam Baer, Esq.

Ms. Miriam J. Baer, Attorney at Law, serves as Legal Counsel to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission and is the Assistant Director of its Legal Services Division. Since 1990, Miriam also has been an adjunct member of the faculty for the Paralegal Program at Meredith College. She co-taught the Corporate Law specialty course for a number of years, and has also taught the Legal Survey course. Miriam now teaches Legal Research and Writing. A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Miriam graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kansas in 1981. She then attended the University of North Carolina School of Law, receiving her J.D. degree in 1984. Following graduation from law school, Miriam joined a Raleigh law firm where she engaged in the private practice of law. In 1987, she joined the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, and is now the Assistant Director of its Legal Division. In addition to her management responsibilities there, Miriam's duties also involve handling consumer complaints, the prosecution and settlement of disciplinary cases and advising the Commission on legal matters.
Hilda Burnett-Baker, Esq.

Ms. Burnett-Baker is an Assistant Attorney General with North Carolina Department of Justice representing the NC Department of Transportation in eminent domain litigation. Ms. Burnett-Baker has also served as an Associate General Counsel in the Education Section. She has a great deal of experience in teaching and education as a Visiting Assistant Professor to the North Carolina Central University School of Law and served as the coordinator of and an adjunct instructor in the Legal Studies at Montclair State College in New Jersey. Ms. Burnett-Baker has been teaching in the Paralegal Program since 1993.

Teresa L. Bowling, CLAS is a paralegal with MANNING FULTON & SKINNER PA in Raleigh, NC where she assists attorneys in real estate litigation, particularly eminent domain and materialmen's liens. Teri graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and earned her Paralegal Certificate, specializing in Real Estate, from the Meredith College Paralegal Program in 1989. She is an adjunct faculty member of the Meredith College Paralegal Program, where she has co-taught the Real Estate Specialty since 1993 and the Real Estate Title Searches short course since 1992. Teri earned both the CLA designation and CLA Specialty Credential in Real Estate from the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. in 1999. A member of the NCBA Legal Assistants Division ["LAD"] and the NCBA Real Property Section, Teri currently serves as an LAD Executive Council Member, Chair of the LAD Continuing Legal Education Committee (20002003 and 2004 to the present), and LAD Liaison to the NCBA Real Property Section (2003 to the present) and previously served as Chair of the LAD Ethics Committee (20032004). She is also a member of the North Carolina Paralegal Association, Inc., serving as Chair of the Ethics Committee from 1996 to 1998, the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc., and the Raleigh-Wake Paralegal Association, Inc.
Jason T. Campbell, Esq.

Mr. Campbell is an Assistant Attorney General with the North Carolina Department of Justice. In his present position he represents the NC Department of Transportation in eminent domain litigation in Wake County. He began his legal career in Detroit, Michigan, practicing eminent domain law representing property owners. Prior to joining the Attorney General's Office, he was a partner in Campbell & Shahady, PLLC, where he focused on real estate litigation in state and federal court as well as real estate transactions in residential and commercial properties.

Ms. Carter has more than sixteen years of general legal experience including over twelve years of experience in intellectual property litigation. She is an instructor in the Paralegal Program at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. Ms. Carter is an active member of the North Carolina Bar Association and currently serves as Chair of the Legal Assistants Division. She is a course planner and featured speaker on topics ranging from professionalism to general litigation to electronic legal research. Memberships: National Association of Legal Assistants, North Carolina Bar Association Legal Assistants Division, North Carolina Paralegal Association and Legal Assistant Management Association.

Ms. Kaufman has been a litigation paralegal with Moore & Van Allen, PLLC, in Raleigh, NC since 1985. Ms Kaufman has been teaching in the Paralegal Program since 1987.
Samantha Kilpatrick, Esq.

Samantha Kilpatrick is a solo practitioner focusing on criminal law. She received her undergraduate degree in Political Studies and Psychology from Meredith College and went on to receive her law degree from UNC School of Law. Ms. Kilpatrick has practiced family law and she also served as an Assistant District Attorney. Ms. Kilpatrick is a member of the Wake County Bar Association and the North Carolina State Bar. She has been teaching in the program since spring 2002.
James C. Ray, Esq.

Mr. Ray is a member of the bar in North Carolina and Georgia, and maintains a private practice as a certified mediator in civil law cases and worker's compensation. He is currently in private practice; previously a partner with LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby & MacRae (formerly Moore, Ragsdale, Liggett, Ray & Foley), in Raleigh. He has written a training manual for the Corporations Division of the NC Department of the Secretary of State and several legal guides for laymen, including: The Most Valuable Business Legal Forms You'll Ever Need, 3rd ed. (Sourcebooks, 2001); The Complete Book of Corporate Forms (Sourcebooks, 2001), and The most Valuable Personal Legal Forms You'll Ever Need (James Ray and Mark Warda, Sourcebooks, 2001). Mr. Ray lives in Raleigh where he has been teaching in the Paralegal Program since 1992 and also has served as an Adjunct Instructor of Business Law at NC State University and an Adjunct Faculty member in the Business School at Meredith College.
Carolyn Scott

Ms. Scott is a law librarian, with experience using and teaching Westlaw, Lexis, Dialog, and the Internet. Her experience includes planning and budgeting library resources, including electronic services, and providing reference service in law firm libraries. She has been a librarian at Young, Moore, and Henderson, P.A. in Raleigh, NC, since 1988. She has taught in the Paralegal Program at Meredith College since 1997.
