Meredith College Students

Hi my name is Jadie Baldwin and I am a 20yr old junior at Meredith College. I am majoring in Biology, pre-med. In my spare time I love to volunteer at Rex Hospital. I work in the Endoscopy unit this semester, but I have worked in almost every other area there in the past three years. I also have a part time job at a bakery decorating cakes and what-not. My activities on campus include being a student advisor to freshmen as well as a First Year Experience teaching assistant. I am a member of Meredith Association of Pre-Health Professional Students (MAPPS). My hobbies include reading, sports and watching as much baseball as possible. I am a huge Braves fan and I also like the Orioles. I like to spend time with my family (5 sisters and 2 brothers). I am from a very small town in Sampson Co, NC and I would definately classify as a 'country girl.' I am one of the few Meredith girls who drive a truck ;-) I also love to travel and recently studied abroad in New Zealand for 6 months. I hope one day to make it to Africa on a volunteer program or with the Peace Corps to help AIDS patients.

My name is Holly Broadbent and I am a senior biology major at Meredith College. I am from Spruce Pine, North Carolina; a small town in the Appalachian Mountains. After graduation, I plan to attend nursing school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am very interested in the global AIDS epidemic. This past summer, I was able to travel with a friend and classmate, Jennie Niland, to Cape Town, South Africa. While there we worked at a hospice center where we assisted in caring for AIDS patients. Currently I am working on my thesis in biology; HIV/AIDS in South Africa and The United States: A Comparative Epidemiology Study.

I will also be looking at AIDS awareness and education in both countries. Any information that you can share with me about the AIDS epidemic in Kenya and the rest of Africa would be very helpful and informative.

My name is Jessica Conicelli, and I am a senior at Meredith College. I am a moecular biology/ psychology double major, which means that when I tell you what I'm going to do when I graduate in May, you'll be surprised. I plan to move to London this summer for at least 6 months (hopefully longer). I have no idea what job I will get when I arrive, nor do I know exactly where I'll live or who I'll live with...I just know that I'll be in a city that I love. I am not nervous about going to London mostly because I have moved a lot throughout my life. I was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where I lived until I was 6 (although I lived in more than one house in that city). Then my family moved to Naples, Florida. When I was ten, we relocated to Virginia, right outside of Washington D.C. We stayed there for two years before moving to Houston, Texas. Once I graduated high school in 2002, I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and I've been here ever since. I'm obviously kinda used to moving around. I also love to travel, though I haven't done too much of it. I plan to change that once I graduate from Meredith. Once I am living in London, hopefully I will be able to get a job with a company such as GlaxoSmithKline, and I will be able to get a work permit for up to five years. I intend to go to law school either in England or the U.S. to be a patent lawyer at some point, though I'm in no rush. I'm much more excited about seeing what's out there right now!

My name is Courtney Crute and I am a Junior at Meredith College. I am originally from Waterville, Maine which is North East of North Carolina. Maine is the most Northern state on the Eastern side of the country. My major is International Studies, but I am also very interested in photography and the anthropology and geography studies. The only way I know how to help with the AIDS crisis is to learn more about it, which is why I am taking this class.

My name is Meg Duncan and I am a senior at Meredith College. I am double majoring in chemistry and mathematics. I was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. After graduation, I hope to enter a MD/PhD combined degree program. I would like to get my PhD in molecular epidemiology or immunology. I plan to work as an Infectious Disease specialist, spending time in both clinical and laboratory settings. I traveled to Kenya over Christmas Break this year with a group of friends. We are starting a non-profit organization to raise funds for the AIDS crisis in Africa. I stayed and volunteered at Nyumbani Children's Home, the first hospice in Kenya for HIV positive children. Nyumbani is home to almost 100 children that have been either orphaned or abandoned by their families because they are HIV positive. The experience was incredible and reinforced my dreams of working in Africa once I become a doctor. I also spent time in an outreach clinic in the slums of Nairobi that treats hundreds of children with HIV. I hope to return to Kenya as soon as possible and am very excited about this opportunity to connect with students in Kenya.

Hmmm what to say about myself well my name is E dizzle just kidding Erica Edwards. I am a senior (YAY!!!) graduating in May with a B.S in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Health. I am applying to graduate programs for clinical research. But I have as my back up the job market so I'm doing the job search thing as well. I know this sounds cliché but I want to find a cure for the "incurable". So, what better place to start gathering information than in Sub-Saharan Africa where I can learn about AIDS and HIV. I have family with AIDS so I know a little about it already mostly I know the emotional toll it takes in its latent stage. I also know about the effects it emits when it's active. So I'm ready to learn more. See ya soon, E dizzle

Hi! My name is Allison Griffin and I am junior biology major and my concentration is pre-pharmacy. This is my 3rd year at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. I moved off campus this year and I am enjoying living on my own in an apartment. I am a student advisor at Meredith and I also do work study in the student activities and leadership development office. I also work at Target pharmacy as a certified Pharmacy Technician. Although my major is biology I also like spanish class and feel that it can be very useful to me in my future. After graduating from Meredith I hope to attend pharmacy school and have a doctorate in Pharmacy. I am from an incredibly small town in North Carolina called Polkton and I have lived there my entire life. I have a twin brother and he attended North Carolina State University until this year. I went to a private, all girls boarding school in Richmond, Va before coming to Meredith. I loved it and I was there for my entire high school career. My hobbies are reading, watching tv, being with my friends and family, driving around in my BRAND NEW CAR (I just got this weekend), and doing sudoko puzzles. I took this class because I hope to somehow be involved in AIDS research once I finish with pharmacy school.

Hey! My name is Jessica Horne, and I am a 19 year old sophomore at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. My major is biology, and I plan to attend medical school after I graduate in May of 2008. I’m undecided as to what I want to specialize in. I’m contemplating a few areas such as pediatrics, dermatology, and optometry. I first became interested in medicine in 5th grade when I wanted to be a pediatric nurse. After telling my mother about this, she suggested I go all the way and become a doctor. So I took her advice, and since then I have become interested in a few other things. I received my nursing assistant’s certification the summer after I graduated from high school. I am now working in a nursing home in my hometown to gain the 500 hours of clinical experience required for my major. It is extremely dirty, hard work, but it has not deterred me from my professional pursuits, but made me more determined to offer better care to those in need.

Although biology is my first love, Spanish runs in a close second. I plan to major or minor in Spanish depending on time, because my parents have informed me that I am on a four year plan. I am studying abroad this summer in northern Spain. I will be living with a host family that doesn’t speak any English and taking eight hours of intensive Spanish classes. I am extremely excited, but nervous as well. It’s going to be hard relying on my Spanish for communication, but I’m sure I will have the time of my life.

I am a very strong Christian and come from a Christian home in a little town outside of Wilmington called Burgaw. I regularly attend Campus Crusade for Christ at NC State and love it! I am very family oriented; my mother is one of my best friends. I talk to several of my family members (parents, grandparents, aunts, siblings, and cousins) on a regular basis. I have one sister who is six years younger than me that I am very close to, and hope that in some way I have made a positive influence on her life. Other interests of mine include running, reading, water sports of all kinds, snow skiing, laughing, old movies, and traveling. I am very excited about this course, and can hardly wait to learn as much as possible about HIV/AIDS and the African culture.

My name is Ashley Leary. I am a twenty year old junior at Meredith College. I am majoring in Biology with no concentration as of right now, but I have been thinking about going into physical therapy. I am also planning on getting a minor in Chemistry. I am currently working on my Senior Research project which is basically about a species of clams from two different locations and their resistance to toxins (primarily sunscreen). I enjoy exercising, the beach or just being near water, spending time with my friends and my family (especially my little niece and nephew), watching Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, and I live by the saying “everything happens for a reason”. I currently live on campus, but I am originally from Pinetown, North Carolina. It is a very small town that no one has probably ever heard of. I have one younger brother and one older sister. My sister has two kids who I absolutely adore. As for my future, I plan on either becoming a physical therapist or working in a quality control lab. I would love to work in a quality control lab because for the past two summers I have been a lab technician for a quality control lab owned by a company named Avoca located in Merry Hill, North Carolina. I also want to get married and have at least two kids. I am very excited about being able to communicate with the Kenyan students in Africa because I believe it will be very helpful in learning to understand how much of an impact AIDS has on them.

After I graduate in May, before I go on to grad school I hope to work as a research assisstant on a study of new HIV treatments in Africa. Right now I live in Raleigh, in a townhouse and my only hobby, except for school work, are my animals. I have a dog (a Boxer), a cat, and a bearded dragon, but I hope to get more reptiles. My name is Jennie Niland, and I’m a senior at Meredith College. I’m majoring in Biology, and I’ve been accepted to Physician’s Assistant school at Methodist College for the fall. I’m very excited about becoming a PA although I don’t know exactly what field of medicine I want to pursue yet. I am from Mount Airy, North Carolina which is a small town located just at the foothills of the mountains. I love to sing and to watch movies with my friends and boyfriend. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Cape Town, South Africa for the past two summers. Last summer I was able to go back to Cape Town with my friend and classmate, Holly Broadbent. We worked in an AIDS hospice which was a very emotional and rewarding experience. Because of our work there, we decided to do our senior thesis on AIDS in both the United States and South Africa. I’m focusing on treatment options, funding, and testing in the two countries. I was very excited to find out about this class because it fits so well with what Holly and I are doing and are interested in. I’m looking forward to learning about another African country’s experience with AIDS and comparing that information with what we are gathering for this country and South Africa.

My name is Jill Palchinsky, and I am a 19 year old sophomore at Meredith College. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Go Steelers!) but my family moved to Cary, North Carolina when I was 7 years old. I have 2 sisters, Juliann and Christa, and I love them very much! I am currently a double major in Biology and Piano Pedagogy. I know, it’s a strange mix, but I love everything that I am working on! I hope to eventually go to medical school and perhaps study ophthalmology, but I’m not absolutely sure yet. Although I am fascinated by the human body and hope to use this fascination to help others, my passion is, and will always be, music. I am always singing, playing piano, or dancing. I have been taking piano lessons since I was 5, and it is my favorite thing to do. I am also a ballerina and have been dancing since I was 3 years old. I sing all the time: in the morning, walking to class, while cleaning my room, and of course in the shower. I prefer Billy Joel and Broadway Musicals. I simply love the arts. My double major keeps me busy, but I still enjoy being involved on and off campus. I am a part of the Meredith Chorale, the Meredith Honors Program, the honors society Alpha Lambda Delta, and the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. I participate in plenty of Meredith traditions, especially Cornhuskin’. I also work on campus as a tutor for math, writing, grammar, biology, and music theory in the Meredith Learning Center. I have started my own business off campus as a piano teacher, but I only have time for 2 students. I have been to France, and I traveled to Belize this past summer to spend 10 days in the rainforest and on an island in the Caribbean. I will be traveling to London, as well as Kenya this summer, so I am excited to learn more about sub-Saharan Africa during the semester.

My name is Whitney Rains, and I am a freshman at Meredith College this year. My older sister, Erin, also attends school here and will graduate in May '06. I'm majoring in Biology and minoring in Spanish and maybe English, too. I'm just starting to get involved with organizations on campus, especially those dealing with the Health Sciences, blood drives, and some leadership activities. I plan to graduate from Meredith in 2009 and continue my education at ECU in order to become a nurse practitioner. I'm thinking that I either want to do something with surgery in the O.R., or deliver babies as a career. And I know that if I practice medicine here, then I'll want to have a solid understanding of the spanish language, which is why I'm minoring in it, but other than that, I just love the language and love to speak it with those who are fluent. I'm actually volunteering at Wake Tech's ESL program, and I get to spend some time speaking Spanish with someone and working on my skills, and I get to spend the rest of the time helping him or her with English skills - I love it. I will probably study abroad somewhere that I can utilize my spanish; however, I definitely want to study and help out somewhere in Africa, too. I will most likely do that when I get medical training though so I can really help. Some other facts about me include my biggest fear - spiders, my favorite thing to do is watch movies, but no horror flicks. I also love to swim, dance, and listen to music - mostly like Top 40, some country, rap, reggae, and a few others. And I'm also a certified EMT - Emergency Medical Technician, which is really cool because I can really help someone if they're having significant health problems. From this class I really hope that I can gain a better understanding of HIV/AIDS. With this knowledge, we can all help to educate others, which, in turn will hopefully help with communicating the truth about and ways of preventing AIDS.

Hello, my name is Brittany Sloan and I am a junior here at Meredith College. My major is molecular biology, and I am just now beginning to become interested in the biomedical sciences. I am interested in science, sleeping, and spending time with family and friends.

Hello, my name is Leigh Smith and I am a senior at Meredith College. I am majoring in Biology with a concentration in Health Science and minoring in chemistry. I play tennis for my college, which takes up a lot of my time practicing and competing. Also, I am involved in Campus Crusade for Christ, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Tri-Beta, and other organizations. I am in the process of applying to obtain my doctorate in physical therapy. I love physical therapy because I am able to combine scientific knowledge with helping patients. The summer after my sophomore year of college I traveled to Nelspruit, South Africa to teach a curriculum based on HIV/AIDS to young children, adolescents, and adults. The program focused on the mechanism of the virus and how the spread can be prevented. It is called True Love Waits and is based on abstinence until marriage. My trip sparked an interest and I am taking this course to learn more about AIDS to help stop the spread.

Hello, my name is Tammy Smith and I am 21 years old. My birthday is on March 16. I am a senior at Meredith College and Biology major. I was born in Nyack, New York but raised in Decatur, G.A. Being here at Meredith has been a transitional experience for me and to say the least it hasn’t been bad at all. It has actually been a great one. I enjoy the teachers and the students here are outstandingly friendly! I met 4 of my life lasting friends; Tasia, Victoria, Shenna, and Tanya, plus many more special friends. I’m an extroversive, intuitive, feeling, and perceiving type of person, and I enjoy meeting and making friends. I love music, poetry, reading, television, shopping, and talking on the phone. Since going study abroad this past summer 2005 to Belize, I want to travel everywhere! I have two wonderful sisters, one loving brother, great supportive grandparents, inspirational father, and a strong-willed mother who supports me daily. I choose to take the biology route because of my passion for science. In high school I wanted to study medicine over seas to help children, so I want to use this major to go to medical school and become a Pediatrician specialized in neonatology. I love children and I have always wanted to help someone with their needs and care. My dream medical school is Johns Hopkins and it will be an honor to be able to get in. I also want to build a foundation for juveniles and low-income children to support their education, extracurricular activities, family issues, and personal issues. Whether I choose the medical route or to have my foundation I would enjoy doing either one because they both make me happy.
