What are the requirements for the honors program?
Honors requirements include honors general education courses, honors in the major, colloquia, and electives. For a more detailed description of honors requirements, see the requirements page.
I have AP credit for English 111. What can I do to fulfill the honors English requirement?
You may take the honors section of English 111 for honors and count the AP credit for elective English, or you can take English 358 for honors credit and count the AP credit for English 111.
What honors courses can I take this semester?
Many honors courses and colloquia are offered each semester, and you can take honors courses by contract. Honors courses are generally designated by an HN in WebAdvisor. For a schedule of upcoming colloquia, click here.
For 2008-09 the following Honors courses will be offered. See WebAdvisor for specific times and registration information.
- Fall: English 111, Psychology 100, Calculus lab, Honors Chemistry 111/141, Honors Biology 101/141 as well as two colloquia.
- Spring: English 111, CORE 100, History 102, Math 245 (statistics), Honors biology stand alone lab (with permission of instructor), and two colloquia.
Do I have to take a science class and a science lab for honors credit?
If a student takes a lab for honors credit in biology, chemistry, earth science or in physics (whether it is a designated honors lab, or a lab with honors done by contract), she receives honors credit for both the lab and the course. She does not also need to sign up for the course for honors credit. In physics and earth science she will be doing Honors assignments in both the lab and the course. Do I have to take a math class and a math lab for honors credit?
If a student takes the honors lab along with a calculus course, she receives Honors credit for both the lab and the course. A four credit math plus lab equals five hours of honors credit. If she were to then major in math, this would count as one of the courses needed for honors credit in the major.
What is a thesis and when is it done?
The honors thesis is a research project conducted by the student and is generally done during the senior year, for more information see the thesis page.
