Honor Societies and Awards
Honor Societies
The Department has three student honor societies: a History honor society (Phi Alpha Theta), a Political Science honor society (Pi Sigma Alpha) and an International Studies honor society (Sigma Iota Rho).
Phi Alpha Theta
The oldest is our chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for students of History. Twice each year Phi Alpha Theta initiates new members, who must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and at least a 3.5 in twelve or more hours of history courses beyond Western Civilization.

Departmental Awards
The Department recognizes the exceptional academic achievement and leadership of a graduating senior with the Sara Lemmon award, named in honor of our former department head, long time scholar, teacher and community leader.
Scholarships
The Alice B. Keith Senior Scholarship, for which juniors in the department apply each year, awards roughly $1000 to that student with the best combination of academic achievement and career goals. The Frank and Carolyn Grubbs Scholarship, named in honor of a husband and wife who together taught in the Department for 70 years, goes each year to that rising senior with the most compelling combination of academic achievement and promise as a teacher. The members of the Department decide upon the recipient of this roughly $2000 award.
