History of Meredith’s Habitat for Humanity Efforts

Cardboard Sign of HabitatMeredith College students, faculty and staff have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for more than 20 years.

Meredith’s campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity was founded by Hayley McPhail, ’08, after she was involved with another local chapter, and inspired the College’s effort to build its own Habitat home.

McPhail wanted the entire Meredith community to participate in the endeavor. She imagined teams of students, trustees, alumnae, faculty and staff working together to build a house. She wanted the club to be a student-initiated and student-led endeavor. She wanted to include as many people as possible in as many ways as possible.

In the fall of 2006 she started the process of forming a Habitat Club on campus. She recruited members and presented a constitution to SGA for approval. She began to raise money to contribute to the building of a Meredith College Habitat for Humanity house. By the fall of 2007 she had helped raise almost $10,000 and had sparked interest and enthusiasm for the project across the campus.

Current members of the College’s Habitat for Humanity chapter are leading the project as McPhail’s vision of a Meredith-sponsored Habitat home is coming to fruition.
