Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the house located?
215 Seawell Ave. in downtown Raleigh—about 10 minutes from Meredith; directions are located on our webpage, http://www.meredith.edu/habitat/work-days-events.htm#directions
When are work days, and how may I sign up for one?
Work days are every Thursday (9-4), Friday (9-4), and Saturday (8:30-4). Volunteer shifts are typically about four hours long, but you may volunteer according to your schedule.
Please fill out a volunteer sign up form, located at http://www.meredith.edu/habitat/volunteer-opportunities.htm, and email it to our volunteer coordinator, Terri Wilson (nealterr@meredith.edu) with your preferred shift.
I have no experience building houses! Can I still help?
Absolutely! There is no experience necessary to volunteer. The only requirement is that all volunteers are at least 16 years old. On-site leaders provide any training you need to complete the day’s tasks, and you may choose which tasks you would like to help with.
Are Habitat homes free for the families?
No; Habitat families are chosen through a lengthy application process. Once they are chosen, Habitat ensures that the mortgage payments are affordable according to the family’s income. Since Meredith is sponsoring the house, our $70,000 goes toward land, materials, etc. and the money from the mortgage goes into a “pot” to secure land and build more Habitat houses. It’s a cycle of safe, affordable homes for deserving families!
Who is our family?
They are a husband and wife originally from Haiti; his name is Oslet, and her name is Mimose. Oslet is blind, but that doesn’t stop him from enthusiastically helping with construction. He’s a hoot, and he can mix concrete better than I could. He also sings and will record a gospel CD after the house is finished. Mimose is as sweet as she can be. Talk with them when you volunteer—they are incredibly nice, and they’re always smiling. Their gratitude toward Meredith and Wake Habitat is so apparent.
Is the house green?
While the home is not 100% green certified, it is being built according to certain “green” specifications. These practices will ensure monthly utility bills of less than $35/month.
When will the house be finished?
Our goal is to hold the dedication in December—preferably before winter break—so our family may enjoy their new home for Christmas!
How can I get involved with the club?
Volunteer! Also, if you’re interested, you may join our club. Our next meeting is November 12 at 6:30 in Harris 214. Join our Facebook group, Meredith Habitat for Humanity; visit our webpage, www.meredith.edu/habitat; or email us at mchabitat@meredith.edu.
