Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for the M.Ed. program?

You are eligible to apply for admission into the program if you hold a baccalaureate degree and a teaching license. Most of the students in the program are current K–12 teachers.

What are the requirements for the program?

Depending on the specialty area you choose (reading, ESL or elementary education), credits may vary from 33–36 credit hours. Completion of the program earns students a North Carolina “M” license.

How long will it take to complete the program?

You can complete the M.Ed. program in as few as two or as many as six years.

When are classes held?

Classes are held one night a week for three hours between the hours of 4:30–8 p.m. for 15 weeks in the fall and spring semesters. Summer course schedules vary to accommodate teachers in year round schools.

Can I afford private graduate college tuition?

Yes, Meredith College’s graduate tuition is $385 per credit hour which is competitive with area private and public colleges and universities. Also, for those who qualify there is teacher tuition assistance and scholarships. Please see financial assistance for more information.

Do I need to take an entrance exam for admission into the program?

To be fully admitted into the graduate education program you will need to successfully complete either the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or the MAT (Miller Analogies Test). However, at Meredith College it is possible to take 6 credit hours or two courses as a PBS (Post-Baccalaureate Student) which will count toward your Master’s degree before taking the GRE or MAT.

Is there a minimum GRE or MAT requirement for admission?

Currently there is not a minimum requirement; however, we want students to successfully complete the GRE or Miller Analogies Test. For a student to be fully admitted we consider your transcript, PRAXIS I scores, GRE or MAT scores, and other requirements.

What is the average class size?

The average class size is 10 students.

As a Post-Baccalaureate student am I eligible for Teacher Tuition Assistance?

No, you must be fully enrolled in the Master of Education program to qualify for Teacher Tuition Assistance.

What if I’m only seeking add-on licensure in ESL or reading?

You can elect to take the course work for add-on licensure in the areas of reading and ESL. Application requirements are the same as those for the master’s program and the course work can be applied to a master’s program if you choose later to earn your M.Ed. at Meredith.

Can I take master’s level classes for continuing education or license renewal?

If you’re looking to renew a teaching license by taking master’s level course work, you can take classes as a non-degree student. Two classes or six credit hours of course work can later be applied to the M.Ed. program if you choose to apply and are accepted. It is the responsibility of students to secure approval from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction prior to pursuing course work.

What if I am seeking my first teaching license?

The master’s program is for those who have already met the requirements for the initial teaching license. Lateral entry teachers or others who wish to earn their initial Class A North Carolina teaching license through Meredith College should call the Department of Education at (919) 760-8316 to inquire about the undergraduate teacher education program, or visit www.meredith.edu/education/licensure-only.htm.
