Am I eligible for the M.Ed. program?
You are eligible to apply for admission if you have a bachelor's degree and a teaching license. Ninety-eight percent of students in the program are currently employed as K-12 teachers.
What are the requirements for the program?
Depending on the specialty area you choose (elementary education, ESL, reading, special education or AIG), credits may vary from 30 to 33 credit hours. On completion of the program you earn a North Carolina "M" license.
How long will it take to complete the program?
You can complete the M.Ed. program in as few as two or as many as six years. Typically, students complete the program in three years.
When are classes held?
Classes are held one night a week between the hours of 5:00-7:50 P.M. in the fall and spring semesters. Summer course schedules vary to accommodate teachers in year-round schools. The M.Ed. with AIG is hybrid, with 70 percent of courses offered on-line and 30 percent on-campus.
Can I afford private graduate college tuition?
Yes, Meredith College's graduate tuition is $420 per credit hour, which is comparable with area private and public colleges and universities. Meredith has a $60 graduate student fee for the M.Ed. program. Also, teacher tuition assistance and scholarships are available if you qualify. Please see financial assistance for more information.
Do I need to take an entrance exam for admission into the program?
To be fully admitted into the M.Ed. program you will need to successfully complete either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). However, at Meredith you may take six credit hours or two courses as a post-baccalaureate student before taking the GRE or MAT. Those hours will count toward a master's degree at Meredith.
As a post-baccalaureate student am I eligible for Teacher Tuition Assistance?
No, you must be fully enrolled in a master's degree program to qualify for Teacher Tuition Assistance.
What if I'm only seeking add-on licensure in ESL, reading, AIG, or special education?
You can elect to take the course work for add-on licensure in the areas of ESL, reading, AIG, and special education. Application requirements are the same as those for the master's program and work can be applied to a master's program at Meredith.
Can I take master's level classes for continuing education or license renewal?
You can take master's classes as a non-degree student toward renewal of your teaching license. Two classes or six credit hours of course work can later be applied to a master's degree program at Meredith. It is the responsibility of students to secure approval from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction prior to pursuing course work.
What if I am seeking my first teaching license?
The M.Ed. program is for those who have already met the requirements for the initial teaching license. Lateral entry teachers or others who wish to earn their initial Class A North Carolina teaching license through Meredith College should call the Department of Education at (919) 760-8316 to inquire about the Master of Arts in teaching program or the undergraduate teacher education program for women.
Are Meredith’s teacher education programs accredited?
Meredith is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC).
