Foreign Languages & Literatures Travel Award
The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures Travel Award (DFLLTA) is a grant made annually to one or more outstanding foreign language majors/minors at Meredith College. The award defrays recipients' travel expenses to and from a program of language study abroad.

Eligibility
The DFLLTA applicant must:
- be a foreign language major/minor in French or Spanish OR be a foreign language minor in German or Italian;
- state her intention to use the award for the purpose of pursuing a language study abroad;
- have completed at least one third-year course in her foreign language major/minor;
- have a GPA of 2.75 or better.
Application Procedures
To apply, students should obtain a
DFLLTA application form from the departmental assistant in J107 Martin and follow the guidelines provided.
The completed application includes application form, transcript, essay, and at least two (2) letters of recommendation from college professors outside the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures. If she desires, the applicant may also submit a letter from a third, off-campus reference of her choice.
The letters of reference and the applicant's essay must be written in English. The essay must provide specifics of the program of language study selected by the applicant (see other side for details).
These materials must be submitted by February 14, 2006 to Dr. Astrid Billat.
The DFLLTA Committee
A committee reviews applications and possibly conducts interviews with the DFLLTA applicants. The DFLLTA Committee is composed of three (3) professors representing the department's major languages and at times a fourth Meredith professor from another discipline. The head of the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures chairs and appoints the committee, striving to rotate its membership each academic year. Committee members make all decisions pertaining to the award or awards to be given during the academic year. All committee members vote.
Evaluation of Applicants
In addition to the eligibility requirements listed above, other criteria include the following:
- the applicant's academic record in the department and in other disciplines
- the quality of the applicant's essay
- equal access by all foreign language majors
Interviews
Upon reviewing applicants, the DFLLTA Committee may conduct an interview in English with each applicant.
Notification of Award
The decision of the DFLLTA Committee is announced at the annual departmental awards ceremony held during the second week of April.
