French

- Elementary French Conversation I (101)

French Minor
Eighteen hours above the 100 level are required to complete a French minor; 12 of the credit hours must be at the 300 level. The 300-level course credit can be satisfied by any 300-level language or literature course whether offered as a class or special studies project, an advanced conversation course, or a course in business French. It can also be satisfied through home stay in a French-speaking country,
an internship, or FRE 302 (offered in connection with a pre-approved program of study in a Francophone country).

Spanish

Spanish Major:
A total of thirty-two credit hours above the 100 level and 3 credit hours from a required history class are required to complete a Spanish major, though more hours are acceptable and recommended. Majors are strongly encouraged to spend at least one summer, if not a semester or year, in a Spanish-speaking country.

Spanish Minor:
Twenty-one hours above the 100 level are required to complete a Spanish minor. One 300 level course can also be satisfied through study abroad in a Spanish speaking country, three semesters of Spanish seminar, or a three-semester internship offered in connection with overseas programs.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers courses in Italian. The Italian Studies minor involves course work in Italian language, culture, and civilization, and may be obtained by taking 18 hours of intermediate-level courses at Meredith, a CRC institution, and/or through study abroad. Chinese
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers courses in Chinese. This course sequence provides students a unique opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese with native speakers trained in teaching foreign languages. While writing, reading, and culture are important dimensions of this course, the principal focus is on speaking. This new course sequence does satisfy the General Education foreign language requirement.
