Federal Work Study Information
The Federal Work-Study program is a need-based program of financial aid providing students an opportunity to work part-time in an approved on-campus job or community service position. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to earn money and obtain transferable skills, all while attending Meredith College. In order to be eligible for Federal Work-Study, a student must be enrolled at least half-time and have documented need. “Need” is calculated based on the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be filed before the priority deadline of February 15 to be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
Federal Work-study positions are considered real jobs. The term “work-study” does not mean that the student may study while on the job. Rather, it means that the student will work in a professional environment to earn the funds necessary to study at Meredith College.
Almost every department at Meredith College employs students part-time. These jobs offer students work related to their skills, academic or career fields, and experiences or interests. Job duties range from those demanding special research skills to those demanding only the willingness to work. Meredith College offices and Raleigh area businesses list part-time positions with the Office of Financial Assistance
The Advantages of a Federal Work-Study Job
- Flexible work schedule – students can arrange your work schedule around your classes
- Convenience of working on or near campus
- Chance to gain valuable work experiences and build references for future employment
- Wide variety of job experiences available on and off campus
- Studies have shown that part-time employment has a positive impact on a student’s academic performance.
How do I apply for Work-Study?
All students must complete the FAFSA, and have demonstrated need. Also, you must be enrolled in a degree program at least half-time, and be making satisfactory academic progress. Continuing work-study students, who wish to return to their same job the following year, need to inform their supervisor. If you are awarded work-study, it will appear on your award letter.
Can I work on campus without Federal Work-Study?
Yes, a student can work on-campus without work-study. You would follow the same process in locating a job.
How do I find a job?
It is the student’s responsibility to find a work-study job. Here is what you should do:
- Go to the Meredith College Website and review the open positions on the Financial Assistance website, http://www.meredith.edu/finaid/jobs.php
- Contact departments where you are interested in working and inquire about work-study positions and the department’s hiring procedures.
How will I be paid?
Once you have accepted a position, you must complete and sign a contract with your supervisor. You must also complete the I-9 hiring form, the state tax withholding form, and the federal tax withholding form. These forms are available in the Human Resources Department on the first floor of Park. For the I-9 form, you will need to bring your driver’s license and Social Security card or other qualifying documents.
You will be paid on the 10th day of each month (see pay schedule) for the hours worked in the prior month pay period. Federal work-study funds are not applied to your student account. Your work-study paycheck will be available in the Accounting Office.
How much can I earn?
Your Award Letter indicates the maximum amount you may earn in a work-study job during the academic year. Jobs have variable pay rates. The initial pay rate is $6.15 per hour. Wage increases are determined by your department and are based upon work performance and increased responsibilities.
The typical award is $1,300 per year. If you receive a new scholarship or grant, your work-study award may be reduced or canceled. You should review carefully any revised award letter sent to you to see if your work-study award amount has changed. You should immediately report any reduction in your work-study award amount to your employer.
Federal Work-Study students work an average of 10 to 15 hours per week. You will arrange a work schedule with your supervisor that accommodates your classes while also meeting the needs of the department. During a semester, you may typically begin work during the first full week of classes and cease work on the last day of classes. Work during periods of non-enrollment, such as holidays, is at the discretion of the department and the Financial Aid Office.
Can I change jobs during the year?
You are encouraged to remain in your position for one academic year. As with any job, periods of short employment may raise questions for a future employer. Your work-study job is an opportunity to establish a good work record for your resume, along with a favorable letter of reference. If you are experiencing any difficulties in your work situation, you are encouraged to discuss your concerns with your employer. If you decide to quit your job, you should give your employer at least two weeks’ notice of resignation.
If you have conflicts that cannot be resolved to your satisfaction after working with your supervisor, you may contact the Assistant Director of Financial Aid for Scholarships and Campus Work.
Should I notify the Office of Financial Assistance if I decide to decline my work-study award?
Yes. Please indicate on your Award Notification Worksheet if you decide not to work so the funds can be given to another eligible student who wants to participate.
Are there resources for finding a part-time job off campus?
Yes, the Office of Financial Assistance maintains a file of part-time job opportunities in the Raleigh community. There are also resources available to assist with resumes and cover letters.
