Mellon Grant Trends from 1997-2003

Information provided on the Mellon Foundation website regarding grants for the year 2004 and years prior to 1997 is not specific enough to determine the amount of funding devoted to projects related to technology in the humanities and social sciences. Further, there is a modicum of ambiguity regarding the primary discipline for some projects; my approach to this is addressed in the notes.

Summary:

Digitization (the creation of digital archives, digital images for ArtSTOR, etc.) became the most frequently funded project type in 1998 and remained so through 2003. Scholarly publishing (efforts to promote online repositories, journals, etc.) was the next most commonly funded project type. A detailed list of the projects can be found here.
