Professional Development Time
Faculty may apply for a one semester release from a course to carry out
research, writing and other professional development projects. Proposals
for spring releases are due the first weekday in September and the first
day after Fall Break. Proposals for fall releases are due on the first day
of class in January. Currently, eight PD Time grants may be awarded each
academic year.
Sabbatical Leave
Each year the College provides sabbatical leave for up to six faculty members
who have completed at least six years of full-time teaching. Applications
are accepted once a year on the last weekday of September. Awards are made
by the President and Vice President for Academic Affairs on the basis of
the Committee's recommendations.
Travel
Summer Grants
The College allocates a large part of its faculty development budget for
summer study grants. In the past, grants have been awarded for expenses
such as tuition, travel and individual study.
Other Faculty Opportunities
Faculty Development does not handle these requests, so please apply to the appropriate office.
Technology Faculty Development Grants
The Academic and Co-Curricular Technology (ACTech) Committee invites proposals
for faculty development to support the innovative use of technology in instruction
and scholarly work. There will be two categories of funding opportunities:
Category I funds Technology Speakers and Category II funds Course Enhancement
projects. See the ACTech Blackboard site for details.
Departmental Funds
Each department receives limited faculty development funds, which are normally
used for travel to conferences; in fact, these funds may be used for any
faculty development project. Apply directly to the Department Head.
Dean Funds
Once the individual's allotment of departmental funds for faculty development
has been used, those who need assistance for travel to a conference where
they will deliver a presentation may apply directly to the School's Dean.
Meredith Abroad
Teaching opportunities in the summer in Italy, England, and Switzerland
program as well as in Bolivia and China. Because its curriculum changes
each summer, the Meredith Abroad program provides an opportunity for many
different faculty members to teach and travel abroad. Faculty members who
would like to teach in the programs should express their interest to Betty
Webb (ext. 8397). She will also provide information about opportunities
for exchange programs in China. If you are interested in Bolivia, contact
Ellen Graden who is the liaison for the Bolivian exchange.
FAME awards
Each spring the College presents FAME and faculty development awards to
six members of the faculty. The awards recognize faculty contributions to
the College in the areas of teaching, advising, special service, and research.
