Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals. Chemical engineers must be aware of all aspects of chemical manufacturing and how it affects the environment and the safety of workers and customers. They design equipment, plan and test methods of manufacturing products and supervise production. Chemical engineers work in a variety of manufacturing industries other than chemical manufacturing, such as industries producing electronics, photographic equipment, clothing and paper. They also work in the healthcare, biotechnology and business services industries.
Environmental engineers address the concerns of the impact of human activity on the environment. Environmental engineers translate physical, chemical and biological processes into systems to destroy toxic substances, remove pollutants from water, reduce non-hazardous solid waste volumes, eliminate contaminants from the air and develop groundwater supplies.
Civil engineering involves the improvement and care of natural environments. Civil engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, dams, bridges, harbors, power facilities, pollution control facilities, water supply and transportation systems.
Computer engineers combine expertise in both electronic hardware and software design. Computer engineers program software systems in computers to provide useful features.
Electrical engineers design, develop, test and supervise the manufacture of electrical, electronic and computer equipment, systems or components. Electrical engineers test new equipment, write performance requirements, develop maintenance schedules and solve operating problems. They may specialize in circuits and devices, communication equipment, control systems and computers as well as power generation, transmission and distribution equipment used by electric utilities.
Industrial engineers determine the most effective way for an organization to use the basic factors of production, including employers, machines, materials, information and energy to make a product or to provide a service. Industrial engineers study the product and its requirements, use mathematical methods to meet those requirements and design manufacturing and information systems. They develop management control systems to aid in financial planning and cost analysis, design production planning and control systems to coordinate activities and ensure product quality and design or improve systems for the physical distribution of goods and services. Industrial engineers develop wage and salary administration systems and job evaluation programs. Although most industrial engineers work in manufacturing industries, they also work in consulting services, healthcare and communications.
