Want the inside scoop on Meredith College? Hear it from our students. Meredith College’s Office of Admissions asked a group of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to share some advice that they believe would benefit an incoming freshman.
For this series, we’ll post responses to questions about the Meredith experience, academics and campus life each week throughout the summer.
This week’s question: “How are you spending your summer break?”
Internships:
•“This summer I have an education internship at the Carolina Raptor Center, a summer research stipend, and am working on my project for a grant from Meredith – the first ever Meredith Art Student Support Grant.” —Kristen Gallagher, ’13 (Click here to read more about Gallagher’s internship).
•“I’m spending my summer break working at an unpaid internship at Time Warner Music Pavilion found through the ever-helpful Meredith CareerLink! Though there's no pay, going to free concerts all summer isn't so bad.” --Samantha Bryant, ’11
•“I will be working at a local church as one of their youth ministries intern. I’ll be planning their youth’s trips and retreats, going on those trips, and hanging out with a ton of youth for the summer. Outside of that, I’m working on some organizational things for this fall’s Cornhuskin’. As co-chair, I’m so enthusiastic about working on Cornhuskin’ in order to make it a great experience for my class.” —Christina Cole, ’13,
Summer Research
•“I am doing a couple of things over this summer. The most exciting one is summer research with my advisor Dr. (Kassy) Mies on siderophores and iron releasing mechanism from them. Though research is turning out to be much more challenging than I anticipated, but it is very intellectually fulfilling, and hopefully I will be able to find the iron chelator I am looking for.” — Zeenat Razvi, ’13
•“I am doing research at NC State in statistics and genetics.” –Allison Huber, ’12
Working
•“I have a summer babysitting job in Raleigh and I am just living here and hanging out!”
— Allie Hargrove, ’11
•I am working in the Office of the Registrar. I work here during the school year, but decided to continue over the summer to make a little extra cash.—Danielle Stott, ’11
•“I haven’t found a job yet this summer but last summer I did an amazing internship for an event planning company. I moved by myself to Washington DC for the summer and learned how to navigate the city and take the metro. On the weekends I would go to the national mall and visit museums and monuments. It was such a great experience not only in an area of interest to me, but also in being independent.” –Emily Pappas, ’12
•This summer I am at home working at a camp. I eventually plan on enrolling in some summer dance classes and I’m definitely coming to Raleigh once every few weeks for Student Advising and just because I miss it.” —Chloe Williams, ’13
Next week’s questions: Next week, we’re asking students about their academic experiences and about campus life. The academic question is “What was your favorite class during your first semester at Meredith?” and the campus life question is “What’s your favorite thing about Raleigh?”
