Meredith College will field a team for the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Second Annual Ethics Bowl competition. This year’s competition, with a focus on “Ethics in Communications,” will be held February 8-9, 2013.
The event will be held at Campbell University School of Law in downtown Raleigh and will feature students from 18 independent colleges and universities from across the state.
Meredith team members are Marlena Brown, ’15, Ashley Hall, ’15, Amy Hruby, ’13, Alissa Jording, ’15, Sydney Maxwell, ’15 , Roxanne McPherson, ’16, Mary Rawls, ’13, and Mollie Schrull, ’14. Campus Coordinators for Meredith are Assistant Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies Steven Benko and Director of Student Leadership and Service Cheryl Jenkins.
Schedule of Competition
The Ethics Bowl Opening Session will begin on Friday at 2:45 p.m. in the Campbell University School of Law auditorium, followed by Round 1 of Team Debates at 3:30 and Round Two at 4:45 p.m. Competition continues on Saturday with Round Three at 8:45 a.m. and Round Four at 10 a.m. The final round of debate and trophy presentation will be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Campbell University School of Law.
The debates will be scored by a panel of three judges that include business and community leaders from across the state. The teams will be evaluated on the quality of their argument, research, presentation style and moral theory. Each round will be facilitated by moderators who also are business and community leaders in North Carolina.
About the NCICU Ethics Bowl
The NCICU Ethics Bowl is designed to provide an academic experience which increases awareness and discourse among students from NCICU colleges and universities and area business and community leaders about applying ethics in leadership, decision-making, interpersonal relationships and other issues in today’s society. NCICU chose the theme “Ethics in Communications” to help encourage a sense of social responsibility and accountability among students at independent colleges and universities. The purpose of the competition is to emphasize the importance of being able to apply ethical standards to situations students inevitably will face as future local, state and national leaders.
