Dance Performance Opportunities
The Meredith College dance program fosters student's educational experiences in forming, performing and producing dance through the following avenues:
Creative Arts Touring Company provides an interdisciplinary experience for arts education licensure students, including dance, theatre, art and music through the creation and performance of integrative arts lecture-demonstrations for public school students.
DanceWorks, the Dance Program's spring concert, is open to all Meredith students. Student choreographers hold auditions, rehearse twice weekly and meet with a faculty advisor on a regular basis. Faculty and guest artists create work in repertory classes that are open to all Meredith students.
Meredith Dance Theatre is a modern-based student company that performs faculty, guest artist and student work in a main-stage concert each fall, at campus and community events, and at the American College Dance Festival each spring. Recent guest artists include Lisa Race, Bebe Miller, Valerie Midgett, Peter DiMuro and Katherine Ferrier. Auditions are held each fall and spring.
Meredith Tap Ensemble , which formed in spring 2006, is a student organization that promotes tap performance. Involvement is by audition. Performance venues include DanceWorks and other campus events.
Nu Delta Alpha, a dance honor society that recognizes students and professionals for high achievement in dance, is designed for dance education students, dance educators and professional dancers to express their devotion to the art form by sharing, recognizing, and promoting dance education within schools and communities. Meredith’s chapter was chartered in 2005.
Theatre Performance Opportunities
Students interested in theatre can audition for Meredith Performs Theatre productions, where they will perform alongside theatre faculty and other professional actors from the Triangle area.
Meredith Ensemble Theatre presents three or four main-stage shows each season, in either Jones Auditorium or Studio Theatre. A variety of productions are usually offered including a musical, a children's show, a classical piece and a contemporary play. Student productions are also performed on a regular basis.
Extra Theatre Company offers opportunities for both theatre majors and non-majors to be involved with laboratory productions. Previous sponsorships include plays and readings for Women's History month and senior projects and the annual production of Vagina Monologues .
Alpha Psi Omega, the National Honorary Theatre Fraternity, was introduced at Meredith in 1938. The goals of Alpha Psi are:
- to promote participation and professionalism in Meredith Ensemble productions;
- to assist Meredith Ensemble theatre patrons;
- to provide at least one service project per year; and
- to assist the theatre faculty in broadening the Theatre Arts program.
