Dance Program of Study
Meredith's dance curriculum blends a broad liberal arts education with the specialized study of dance as a performing art.
All candidates for the dance studies major must complete a series of general education requirements as well as the 40 credit hour core curriculum in dance studies, and a set of electives or requirements for one area of concentration in dance (dance education or private studio teaching).
We offer dancers rich educational experiences that foster their development as choreographers, performers and teachers. We believe educating the whole person/artist best serves our students in both their professional and personal endeavors.
The emphasis of our curriculum in technical training is contemporary dance supported with classes in ballet, tap, jazz and other dance forms.
Our technical training is rigorous, but it is only one aspect of Meredith's program. We integrate learning experiences in
- the creative process (improvisation and composition),
- the movement sciences (movement analysis, anatomy, physiology, and somatics), and
- theory (dance in soceity, dance history, movement fundamentals, and teaching methods.)
Many of our students choose to combine their training in dance with the study of other fields such as psychology, sociology, pre-physical therapy and theatre. Such programs of study are excellent preparation for graduate programs or for using dance in psychological, community or medical applications.
Visit our Courses page for specific requirements for each of the dance concentration options.
