Meredith Selected for 2012 Regional and National ACDF Galas!
Dancers from Meredith College attended the American College Dance Festival Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference at James Madison University February 29-March 3rd. Part of the festival included an adjudication of 39 dances from 20 Colleges and Universities. Adjudicators Nicole Stanton, Douglas Nielson, and Monica Bill Barnes chose 12 dances, including both of Meredith College's entires, to showcase in the gala performance of the festival. Meredith dancers performed Senior Dance Studies major Betsy Graves' 27 Million and Associate Professor Carol Kyles Finley's Prelude to Settling in the gala. Prelude, which is a collaboration with alumna Lacy Lowder, was then one of three dances chosen to represent the Mid-Atlantic region at the National Gala May 24-27 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Visit and Dance
Dance with current students and faculty during Senior Visitation Days. Just list dance as your first choice of academic interest on the form. After a level-inclusive class incorporating modern, ballet, and jazz, faculty will give visiting students written recommendations about technique level and company auditions for the 2012-2013 academic year. If you are unable to attend a Senior Visitation Day, we still welcome you in our technique classes during your campus visit and will give the same recommendations following your visit. There is no audition for the dance major.
The Dance Program at Meredith
provides women with opportunities to develop artistically through disciplined training, creative exploration and self-discovery.
The Dance Studies major trains students specifically for Dance Education and Private Studio Teaching and broadly for careers in performance, choreography, arts administration, or further study in dance. Non-majors can take class and participate in all performances.
As a dance student you'll have opportunities to take advantage of the department's many exceptional programs, specialized areas of study and venues for presentation of original choreographic works. In fact, Meredith students are such active choreographers that the program has taken on a choreographic focus over the years.
Meredith College also hosts the annual North Carolina Dance Festival, which offers students the chance to perform with and help produce the work of North Carolina's best choreographers.
Other highlights include:
- Performance opportunities with DanceWorks, Meredith Dance Theatre and the Meredith Jazz and Tap Company, as early as freshman year; The Freshman/Transfer Ensmble performs a work each year that is created by a faculty member specifcally for dancers new to Meredith.
- Intensive learning experiences with regional and national guest artists, including nationally acclaimed artists such as Bebe Miller, Lisa Race, Pamela Pietro, and Talani Torres
- Participation in the American College Dance Festival, where you will attend master classes and present work for adjudication.
