Creating an Electronic Resume
You will most likely apply for a job or internship by sending your resume electronically. You may submit your resume by email or paste it into an online form on the employer's website. In either case, you will need to take steps to make your resume e-friendly. Here are a few tips:
Guidelines for Creating an Electronic Resume:
- Incorporate keywords that accurately describe your qualifications
- Send your resume as an attachment only if requested by the employer
- Save a copy of your resume as a text file (save as text only with line breaks)
- Eliminate tabs, bullets and other special characters on your resume
- Use keyboard characters, such as the asterisk (*), dash (-) and equal sign (=), to format your resume
- Keep your line width narrow and type at a consistent size
- Copy and paste your text resume into an email message or online form
- Include a short cover note with your electronic resume when possible.
- Add a descriptive subject line to your email message
- Send a copy to yourself or a friend to test your formatting
- Proofread carefully before sending!
