How You Help Your Student

The impact of family members in the lives of the student continues throughout the college years. While providing emotional, spiritual, academic, and financial support during this period of transition, family members can also offer career-related support to the student in these ways:

• Provide non-judgmental listening and honest feedback.
• Initiate conversations on career plans.
• Help your student clarify ideas, priorities, and concerns.
• Try to see the situation from your student's perspective.
• Help to develop independent decision making skills and increase motivation.
• Refer your student to colleagues, friends, neighbors, family, and community members with experience related to her/his interests.
• Encourage your student to avoid procrastination and begin the career planning process early, during the first year.
• Encourage your student to take advantage of all resources available.
