How Families Can Help Their Student
Career development is an ongoing process in which people make and implement vocational decisions over the lifetime. Family members can play an important role in students’ career endeavors.
Career-related support includes:
- Provide non-judgmental listening and honest feedback.
- Initiate conversations on career plans.
- Help your student clarify ideas, priorities and concerns.
- Try to see the situation from your student's perspective.
- Help to develop independent decision making skills and increase motivation.
- Refer your student to colleagues, friends, neighbors, family and community members with experience related to her/his interests.
- Encourage your student to avoid procrastination and begin the career planning process early, during the first year.
- Encourage your student to take advantage of all resources available.
