Nobel Peace Prize Winner To Speak at Meredith

Shirin EbadiIn September, Meredith College will welcome Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shirin Ebadi, who will deliver the 2006 Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture. Ebadi will speak in McI ver Amphitheater on Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2003 for her work as a human rights attorney in her native Iran. Her autobiography was published in May 2006.

Ebadi's visit is part of the College's 2006-07 theme, which is "The Status of Women: Our Future, Our Responsibility." The yearlong series of speakers and events will examine the status of women from political, economic and social perspectives.

Ebadi follows fellow Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel, who visited Meredith in 2003, in presenting the Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture. The Wallace fund was established by the Meredith College Class of 1971. It honors Dr. Lillian Parker Wallace, who served as professor of history at Meredith from 1921 to 1967.

Other Wallace Lectures have been delivered by Sir Harold Wilson, former prime minister of Great Britain, in 1978, former President Jimmy Carter in 1986, and former associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Sandra Day O'Connor in 1991.
