The Meredith College International Lecture Series, an opportunity to explore world cultures through history, literature, politics and religion, will begin on September 5, 2012. Each lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in Carswell Auditorium.

 

Featured in the series this year are the following events.

 

September 5: “Iranian Women, Forerunners of Democracy in the Middle East,” presented by  WomenNC Founder and Women’s Rights Activist Beth Dehghan.

 

Throughout Iran's long history, women have weathered many turbulent moments and have proved remarkably resilient and strong under pressure. Although their place in society seems to have been dictated by whatever regime ruled at the time, their struggle for equality and freedom has prevailed.

 

October 22:  "Imagining the Monstrous: The Beast of the Gévaudan and 18th-century French culture," presented by UNC-Chapel Hill Professor of History Jay Smith

 

What makes people believe in monsters?  What function does the monster serve in the human imagination?  A look at the sensational story of the Beast of the Gévaudan, an event that occurred when France stood on the threshold of the modern world, provides intriguing answers to these questions.

 

November 12: “Finding Maria do Ceo, or What Spanish and Portuguese Literature Have to Do with Women's Studies,” presented by  Brigham Young University Associate Professor of Spanish and Women’s Studies Coordinator Valerie Hegstrom

 

Hegstrom’s research focuses on the recovery of literary texts (plays, poems, stories, and letters) written in Spanish and Portuguese by noblewomen and nuns in the 16th and 17th centuries. In this particular lecture, she will discuss the life and writings of the Portuguese nun, Maria do Ceo, and how they relate to women and women’s studies today.
