First Senior Visitation Day of the Year Held
Submitted by Grace Sugg
On Friday, September 16, the Office of Admissions welcomed 92 high school seniors and 98 of their guests to campus for the first Senior Visitation Day of the year. Students were invited to “Think Outside the Box” at Meredith by attending a class, taking a campus tour, and hearing from current students, faculty and staff.
The Office of Admissions appreciates all of the assistance and support received from Meredith’s faculty and staff in helping to make this event successful. We thank you for your participation in helping to recruit the Class of 2016.
Please save the date for the next Senior Visitation Day on Monday, October 31.

Music Faculty Member Named RPTA Teacher of the Year
Margaret Evans, a member of the Meredith College piano faculty, has been awarded the first “Teacher of the Year Merit Prize” by the Raleigh Piano Teachers Association (RPTA). A stipend, sponsored by Ruggero Piano Company, and commemorative plaque were awarded to Evans at the most recent meeting of Raleigh Piano Teachers.
“To be selected by one’s peers for such an award is quite meaningful to me; and to have been chosen by RPTA, one of our nation’s most active professional music organizations, makes it even more special,” Evans said. “I am proud of RPTA’s long-standing association with Meredith College; many of RPTA’s leaders and finest teachers are our own Meredith graduates.”
Criteria for selection included excellence in teaching, commitment to students and significant contributions to professional organizations and outstanding support of the music community.
Evans’ students have won numerous awards at the state and regional level, both in solo playing and playing concertos with orchestra, and several have been recognized at the national and international level. Evans judges regularly in Hong Kong and throughout the United States. Her professional connections have enabled her to bring international concert artists such Olga Kern (Van Cliburn Gold Medalist), Christopher O’Riley, John Owings and Sergei Babayan to Meredith at little or no cost to the College for concerts, master classes, and interaction with students.
The Raleigh Piano Teachers Association is a local affiliate of the North Carolina Music Teachers Association serving the professional piano teaching community of Raleigh, N.C and surrounding areas.
Meredith Hosts Networking Event for Students
Meredith students connected with potential employers during “Career Connections: A Networking Event,” on September 27, 2011.
Professionals from a wide range of fields were available to help students gather career advice, gain confidence in their networking skills, and develop leads for internships and jobs.
To help students prepare, optional pre-event workshops were offered by Meredith’s Academic & Career Planning office. The workshops helped students know what to expect and how to best interact with professionals.
The Career Connections event was sponsored by Academic & Career Planning, the Office of Student Leadership & Service, and the Office of Sustainability. It is part of Meredith’s Sloan Family Student Leadership Program.
