Meredith Team to Represent the U.S. in Model UN

Meredith’s Model United Nations team will represent the United States in the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN), November 17-20, 2011.

Last year, Meredith’s Model UN team represented three different countries. Associate Professor of Political Science Jeff Martinson, who advises the team, said representing a large delegation this year is an honor.

“The U.S. is always important, because its representatives serve on so many committees,” Martinson said. “To have been chosen means the organizers trust Meredith’s capabilities.”

Meredith Model UN President English Clemmons said preparations this year were different, but all of the goals and steps taken as a team were the same as for previous Model UN or Model Arab League conferences.

“We are still preparing for the same conference with the same rules and the same goals in mind so we want to make sure that we master the integral details such as Parliamentary Procedure, just as we have done years before,” Clemmons said.

“The U.S. is different because not only do we hold a very significant amount of power at the SRMUN conference, but also it is important for us to be experts on everything that power ability has to offer and everything it has the ability to diminish,” Clemmons said.

Representing their own country adds an unusual element for students on Meredith’s team.
“It is more difficult because it is important for us to put just as much time and energy (if not more) into becoming experts on our own country, its flaws and perfections,  and it can be hard to step back and look objectively at a country when you call it your home,” Clemmons said.

The Model UN team is made up of 18 students who are pursuing a variety of majors at Meredith, including biology, business, English, and religious and ethical studies.

“We attract people from all cultures and disciplines, so you really don't have to be involved in history, international studies, or political science to do well and enjoy it,” Clemmons said.  “The qualities that you gain and/or refine by participating in MUN are qualities that will benefit you for the rest of your life. By the end of fall semester members of the club and class are amazing public speakers, proficient in parliamentary procedure, experts in researching, and skilled at solving problems as a team. Anyone who enjoys understanding more about the world around them would excel in Model United Nations.”
