Thanks to generous support from Technology Services, the Department of Art recently installed 12 iMac computers in a new Studio Lab in the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center. The new Mac Lab greatly enhances educational programming for students studying graphic design, publication design, typography, web design, interactive design, book design, advertising design, digital imaging, and digital photography, among others. It also enhances Meredith Art students’ ability to access industry-standard software, which will give them real-world expertise in producing “The Colton Review,” Meredith’s Art & Literary journal, as well as practical applications for their classroom learning. This new lab substantially improves Meredith College’s ability to provide a cutting-edge arts curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities for its students and faculty.
Prior to the addition of this new space, the Department of Art's enrollment capacity in many courses was limited and older lab spaces provided inadequate physical space. The new Mac Studio Lab has enabled the Art Department to create an atmosphere that fosters collaboration and reflective study. The new space better utilizes a large classroom and now offers a multi-use space that includes a computer desk area, art tables for open workspace, a large conference table for lectures, presentations, and critiques, and lastly, a common area for casual critique or student lounge.
The laboratory, located in Room 114 of the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center, opened this semester.
“We are now able to provide students with up-to-date knowledge and expertise that will enhance their marketability upon graduation,” said Associate Professor of Graphic Design Dana Ezzell Gay.
The 12 new Macintosh computers have been installed with Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 software, which includes InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and other programs needed for more than ten different art classes.
