Cindy Kohnen, a senior in graphic design at Meredith, with minors in photography and studio art, is one of three college student artists to be chosen for the North Carolina Museum of Art’s billboard project.
Kohnen’s “Cycles” will be enlarged and installed on one of the three billboards along the Greenway path that can be accessed from Meredith’s campus and winds through the Museum Park. She was chosen through a competition held by the museum in conjunction with the “El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote to You about Africa” exhibition. The billboards normally feature images from professional artists, and rotate semi-annually.
“Cycles” was originally three separate prints done in the Digital Photography course taught by Meredith Associate Professor of Art Shannon Johnstone. For the NCMA opportunity, Kohnen combined them into one wide expanse.
Kohnen says the series, “…reflects the different stages of life after death… The repetition of the circular formation created with grass embraces earth’s life cycle. I used this repeating green element to reference life and to allow the viewer to embrace the nature of death and our own life cycles. I used color throughout this series to depict stages of human life starting with birth, softness, and purity and ending with wisdom, age, and decomposition.”
The other student artists chosen for the billboard project are Sydney Cobb from Alamance Community College, and Isaiah Johnson from St. Augustine. Depending upon weather, the billboards will be installed in mid-April.
