Meredith College's Presidential Lecture Series will be funded for 2011-12 through a $25,000 contribution from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and a $30,000 contribution from the Wells Fargo Foundation.
The Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College, which was established in 2005, stimulates and enhances the intellectual and academic climate at Meredith and in the broader community.
In previous years, the series was funded exclusively by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Meredith's Institutional Advancement staff sought additional funding in order to continue this important Meredith series, which has brought nationally- and internationally-recognized speakers to campus in the six years since it was established.
In its inaugural year, the Presidential Lecture Series welcomed documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Doctors Without Borders U.S. Executive Director Nicolas de Torrente and architect William McDonough, a sustainable design leader. Other speakers in the series have included Nancy Pelosi, the first woman Speaker of the House, historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Michael Beschloss, and journalists Judy Woodruff, Ellen Goodman and Nicholas Kristof.
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Sonia Nazario, author of "Enrique's Journey," the 2011 Summer Reading Program selection, will deliver the next lecture in this series on August 29, 2011, at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.
