Family, friends and former colleagues came together to honor former Meredith Professor of Communication John Creagh on June 13, 2011, when a signing ceremony was held for the The John Creagh Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The John Creagh Scholarship Endowment Fund will fund tuition and other related costs for undergraduate students of communication, theatre and literature who have demonstrated financial need and academic merit. The fund was established to honor Creagh, who passed away in 2007.
Attending the event were Creagh's daughter, Anna Creagh, sister Terri Creagh, cousins Jim Sabiston and Sonia Moore, '61, and former colleagues Allen Page, Doug Spero, Michiko Yamada, Cathy Rodgers, Bill Brown and Betsy Stewart, and Institutional Advancement staff Susan Metts, Billie Jo Cockman and Cindy Godwin.
In his more than two decades of service to Meredith, John Creagh taught 36 different courses, including communication theory, intercultural communication, communication ethics, oral interpretation of literature and public speaking. He worked with more than 200 students on independent research projects, theses and internships.
Speaking on behalf of the College, retired Vice President for Academic Programs Allen Page said John Creagh was a "renaissance person, an extremely talented teacher, actor and academic leader. Through this endowment, his work and commitment to Meredith will be extended to another generation of students."
Creagh's daughter Anna Creagh has followed in her father's footsteps to study culture and performance and is completing her Ph.D. at UCLA. She said she grew up on the Meredith campus, and the stories her father told her about his students at Meredith inspired her to become a professor.
"April marks four years since his death," Anna Creagh said. "I think of him every day, and because I think of him, I think of Meredith."
