The Library and Reflection – A Tradition Expands Online
Submitted by Ted Waller

In the busyness of the demands of daily life, the Carlyle Campbell Library is a place to find a few moments of refreshment for many faculty, staff, and students – where we can step back, take a breath, and look at things with a different perspective. Libraries have long been a place for thought and reflection, and our library has expanded this tradition to its website. The center of the library home page is reserved for short thoughts and sayings that can put our users in a quiet, thoughtful place even if they are not in the building.

The home page has included thoughts from Boswell, Leonardo, Dr. Seuss, B.B. King, Sufi mystics, and 17th century haiku. The Carlyle Campbell Library staff hope that website visitors will take a moment to look at the reflection spot and contemplate on what they find, like this recent quote from Victor Frankel:

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Where to Find Inclement Weather Announcements

In the event of inclement weather, decisions about closures or delays are made with the safety of all members of the Meredith community in mind, and announced as quickly as possible.

When inclement weather is predicted in the Raleigh, N.C. area, members of Meredith’s executive leadership team use multiple sources to review weather reports, monitor road conditions both on- and off-campus, and consult with other appropriate local officials to determine whether schedule changes are necessary.

Decisions to cancel classes, close administrative offices or delay the opening of campus are typically announced by 6 a.m. If it becomes necessary to make a change once the initial decision is announced, as much notice as possible will be given.

Faculty or staff needing to announce department or program-specific cancellations or schedule changes (library hours, dining hours, etc.) can submit an announcement to Meredith e-news.

College closure or delay decisions are communicated directly to faculty, staff and students through the following methods:

•Inclement Weather line, 919-832-8878;
•Email to all students, faculty and staff;
•Meredith College web site and enews; and
•The College’s official Facebook page.

The following local media outlets are also contacted with information about closures and/or delays:
•WRAL-TV and WRAL.com;
•WTVD-TV;
•WNCN-TV;
•News 14 Carolina; and
•WPTF Radio.
