The Meredith Avenging Angels basketball squad played seven games during the academic winter break, winning three of their last four contests to stand at 4-6 overall this season. Meredith defeated Randolph College 72-69 on December 29 and Hollins University 74-65 the next afternoon. After the New Year the team opened at home with a USA South doubleheader, defeating Mary Baldwin 82-28 before falling to Averett 64-54 during their most recent game.
Sophomore transfer McKenzi Edwards joined the lineup in December after watching the first six contests sidelined by injury. Beginning with the Randolph win, Edwards now sits atop the Meredith leaders averaging 13.5 points and 5.8 assists from the point. Freshman Laquetta Hairston continues to support the Avenging Angels as a backup at the point guard position and dished out 11 assists during the last four games.
Standout Keyanka Bailey scored a career-high 24 points versus Hollins and continues to lead the offensive efforts for Meredith. In addition Bailey posts an average of 5.8 rebounds and nearly two steals per game. Defensively, sophomore Danielle Lee stands apart from the rest of the group as a constant force against opponents and leads her team with 7.5 rebounds per game.
Head Coach Melinda Campbell and her staff look for play options to free up shooter Bryana Holmes, the lone senior Avenging Angel. With enough time and a good pass, Holmes will knock down most any shot for her team and averages 73% of her points from three-point range this season.
After a three-game tour on the road, Meredith returns to home-court action Saturday, January 19, versus Methodist. Join the dedicated fans as the Avenging Angels battle for a conference playoff bid, set aside for the top eight teams at the end of the regular season.
