Meredith College will host the first Ethics Bowl sponsored by the North Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities (NCICU), February 10-11, 2012. The College will also field a team in this inaugural competition, which is meant to showcase ethics as a hallmark of the student experience at Meredith and other independent colleges and universities.
Meredith team members are Elizabeth Bodine, ’13, Mary Rawls,’13, Erica Rogers, ’13, Menjie Zhang, ’12, Mollie Schrull, ’14 and Saba Sodhi, ’15. Assistant Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies Steven Benko and Associate Professor of Business Jane Barnes are serving as faculty coaches. Director of Student Leadership and Service Cheryl Jenkins is serving as the campus coordinator of this event.
The Meredith team is one of 14 teams from colleges and universities across North Carolina that will compete in the Ethics Bowl. The competition includes five rounds of debates. To prepare, teams were given 10 case studies that focus on this year’s “Ethics in the Workplace” theme.
Judges will score the teams using the following criteria: clarity and intelligibility, identification and discussion of central ethical dimensions, deliberative thoughtfulness and avoidance of ethical irrelevance.
NCICU sponsored the event to provide an academic experience that increases awareness and discourse among students from NCICU colleges and universities about applying ethics in leadership, decision-making, interpersonal relations and other issues.
The opening session for the Ethics Bowl will be held on Friday, Feb. 10 at 2:45 p.m. in Cate Student Center. Round One team debates at 3:30 p.m. and Round Two at 4:45 p.m. Rounds Three and Four will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 8:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. Competitions will be held in the Harris Building and the Science and Mathematics Building. Specific room assignments will be announced on February 10. The final round and trophy presentation will be held in Jones Chapel at 11:30 a.m.
