Daisy Trade Too, an on-campus food pantry, supports students in need by providing food and school supplies.
Located in Jones Chapel, the Daisy Trade Too opened in August 2012. The Daisy Trade Too is open 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday (times subject to change). Freshman in Meredith’s Impact Raleigh program staff the pantry as part of their community service requirement.
The effort began in the fall of 2012 when Peggy Ross, Meredith’s Raleigh Fellows Liasion, noticed that some students needed help buying food and school supplies.
“I was able to connect these students with organizations in the Raleigh area. After many conversations with these students, I wondered if it would be possible to start a food pantry and school supply area on our own campus to serve Meredith students in need,” Ross said.
Ross says around five students per day visit the pantry for food or other supplies. Demand for school supplies is higher at the beginning of the semester and during midterms and exams.
The Daisy Trade Too is open to all students, but students with higher need can be referred to Ross or Chaplain Stacy Pardue for additional support, including donated gift cards for gasoline and supermarkets.
Ross asks that faculty and staff help alert students who could benefit from the Daisy Trade Too that this support is available.
“We really need faculty and staff to spread the word that we are here,” Ross said. “There are still many students that do not know about the Daisy Trade Too. They can also help by being observant and noticing a struggling student then referring them to Stacy or me.”
Ross points out that The Daisy Trade Too is a confidential service that is also open to employees who need support.
“We started this project because there was a need. Not all students are well-off,” Ross said. “If you notice a student is struggling in class, let them know about The Daisy Trade Too. Maybe we can help.”
Employees can also support The Daisy Trade Too by donating needed items. Ross suggests the following:
Donated items need to be inventoried before they are put on The Daisy Trade Too shelves. Take donations to Ross’s office in Jones Chapel or to the Jones Chapel kitchen. To arrange pick up of a donation, contact Ross at rosspegg@meredith.edu.
