Cate Student Center Gets Updated Look

Submitted by Sharon Campbell, Director of Facilities Services

Cate Center LoungeThe Cate Student Center lobby and the student lounge on the second floor underwent refurbishment this summer thanks to funds from Student Leadership and Facilities, and contributions by the Parents Board. This project was spearheaded by commuter student leadership beginning in 2010–11.

Preparations included gathering feedback from students on what they need and would like to see in the Cate Center and working with Professor of Interior Design Martha Burpitt’s 2012 interior design classes who did a fantastic job of presenting concepts and colors for the space and sharing those designs with students for their feedback. The final design choice was selected from among the four student designs presented, along with popular features from each design.

The Cate Center has a new neutral color pallette with Meredith maroon accents on the elevator shaft and select walls along with a new tile floor with grey accents and new carpet tiles in a subtle grey- striped pattern. Additional outlets, which were the top need for students, and two L-shaped countertops have been added to accommodate student use of laptops. The computer area formerly located near the BeeHive has been moved to the right side of the room near the windows and new chairs for the computer desks will arrive this week. The area closest to the BeeHive now has a café appearance with the addition of tables and chairs previously used throughout the space. Facilities Services incorporated sustainable practices into the project through the re-use of existing furniture by replacing the worn cushions and re-upholstering the lounge furniture.  In addition, the lobby furniture on the 1st floor of Cate is being re-upholstered and the carpet was replaced to freshen up the entrance.

Display space will soon have artwork and a colorful display of international flags will further enliven the space below the skylight on the 2nd floor. Once all the furniture and accessories are complete, there will be an Open House for the campus community.

Thanks to all those who worked on this project and special thanks to Cheryl Jenkins, Tomecca Sloane, Zeenat Razvi, ’13,  Ann Gleason, Jane Mitchell, Martha Burpitt, Bill Brown, Todd Lechner and Doug Alm for their invaluable assistance. Contractors for the project were CTI Properties (paint, tile & carpet) and ACT Electric.
