Tony Award Winner Twyla Tharp to Speak at Meredith April 13
By Melyssa Allen

Twyla TharpTony and Emmy Award winner Twyla Tharp will present Meredith College's 2011 Woman of Achievement Lecture on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. The lecture is part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College.

In a lecture titled "The Creative Habit," Tharp will share practical lessons and exercises for stimulating ideas creation, getting out of a rut, and finding inspiration in the everyday. Creativity isn't just for artists. Whether someone is a painter or a businessperson, making an effort to think creatively can increase his or her productivity and happiness. All it takes is the willingness to make it a habit.

Tharp has choreographed more than 135 dances, five Hollywood movies, directed and choreographed four Broadway shows and written two books. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, 19 honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President's Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize, and a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor. Her many grants include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Twyla Tharp at a public reception to be held immediately following the lecture.

This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required; seating will be first-come, first-served.

In addition to the public lecture, a Campus Conversation with Twyla Tharp will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. This event is open to all Meredith community members.

Each year, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College is designed around Meredith's campus theme. For 2010-11, the campus theme is "Catalysts for Change."
