Meredith Student Earns State Department Internship in China

Meredith College student Hallie Willis, ’12, has been selected for a summer internship with the U.S. State Department. She will be working at the Management Office at the United States Consulate General in Shanghai, China.

Willis’ interest in working abroad was sparked by her participation in a Meredith College study abroad program in Iceland last year.

“Not only did I have the time of my life, but also studying abroad really helped me put my future into focus,” Willis said. “As soon as I came back I began looking for another way to go abroad again.”

Willis is interested in working in the Foreign Service after graduation, and the State Department internship offers an opportunity to gain experience in this field. With assistance from Meredith faculty, the International Programs office and Academic & Career Planning staff, Willis applied through USAjobs.gov, then filled out a Department of State application. She was one of 1,000 interns chosen from more than 11,000 applicants.

While each State Department internship experience is unique, Willis expects her duties to include “helping with budget projects, organizing educational and cultural exchange activities, or assisting in recruiting U.S. speakers and specialists for overseas programs.”

Willis is earning a degree in international studies and political science at Meredith.
